The art of removing soldered components is one which requires the correct tools. The key is not to overheat and thereby damage any of the surrounding components on the circuit board. Whilst they can be used for a variety of different applications, today more than ever temperature controlled soldering and desoldering stations are being used to repair or modify items that most people would throw away, presuming them to be broken and therefore worthless.

A basic soldering iron is something that many of us would find in the home. Not so recognisable perhaps is the desoldering station. More likely to be found in a workshop specifically dealing with repairs, the desoldering station allows components to be removed through a targetted heating process. The temperature and flow of the heat can be controlled, reducing the risk of the overheating of surrounding areas. Once at the desired temperature, the solder becomes molten. A high pressure vacuum gun, with a specific nozzle is held in place and activated. The sodler is sucked away and the component can be removed with ease, either with a suction gun, or perhaps a pair of tweezers. A variety of desoldering nozzles are available to ensure that heat is directed only to the part of the job that requires it.

4. It is better for you to heat the gold solder from the distance first. After the flux paste has dried and becomes hard, the flux will be clear and melt. You can heat the solder directly when those sign has emerged. By heating the solder, it will slump and then it connects together. You must put the necklaces in the right position. If it is needed, you can always move it with the tweezers.
5. After those processes, you should cool the gold. You can put the necklace in the pickle solution. The pickle will help you to remove the flux, oxides, and any residues. You can make it clean and shiny again. After that, you can wash and dry your necklace.

How to Solder Stained Glass

You have created your stained glass pattern. Now you need to transfer it to the glass and then join the different pieces together. The most frequently used method for joining the different pieces is achieved by soldering.  For you to do this on your own, you must at the minimum, have a soldering iron, adequate quantity of copper solder and flux. You would also need pre-cut adhesive copper strips.

If you cannot obtain pre-cut strips of the required dimensions, you can buy one or two copper sheets whose size should roughly match the length and width measurements of your glass pieces. Order a little extra to factor in waste.

Prior to doing the actual soldering, all edges must be cleaned thoroughly. Dust particles trapped within the solder would weaken the joints over time and even lead to a distorted and uneven window surface in extreme cases.

Next thing you do is to plug the soldering iron into the power supply to give it time to heat up to the appropriate temperature. As you do this, set out the copper strips on the glass edges. If you did not succeed to obtain strips from the hardware store, then take time to cut the copper sheet into strips that slightly exceed the length, width and thickness of the glass. The copper sheet is very thin and a set of tailoring scissors should be able to cut through cleanly.

After preparing the copper strips for the glass, pull away the paper back to expose the side with the glue or other bonding agent. Append the copper strip all round the glass edge making sure that the excess ends flow onto the face of the glass. Use a pointed object such as a bread knife or spoon to push in any irregular sections.

If you do not correct these sections, they will be visible after the soldering is complete and will give an untidy look to the final product. Brush the flux on either side of the copper foil. The flux is very important before soldering as it serves as second level of surface cleaning. Flux removes oxides from the surfaces of the metal pieces being joined to ensure a strong final bond is achieved.

From here, you now get into the actual soldering process. Different experts recommend varied techniques to achieve the best finish. The underlying principle is that you must be careful when doing the soldering because undoing a poorly soldered can leave the glass looking messy especially if addressed long after the solder has dried.

One of the best ways to do it yourself is by first moving the end of the heated copper solder as close as possible to the copper strip. You must be careful not to touch it though. Once you have done this, use the soldering iron to touch the copper solder piece so that the molten metal drops onto the gaps between the strips.

Move gently all around but do not be too slow as cracks may appear on the joints due to large variance in temperature at the joints. Once you are done, make sure you move the soldering iron away from the solder piece. Allow for cooling and there you have your joint.

1 Oil-filled cutter. There's lots of different types of cutter, but make sure you buy one that has a reservoir for oil. This automatically lubricates the tugsten carbide wheel as you make your scoreline, which saves you from constantly having to dip it in oil. Buy an oil-filled pistol grip cutter if you think you might have trouble applying pressure with a pen-shaped cutter.

2 Grozing Pliers. A tool specifically made for stained glass, the grozier is used for breaking difficult cuts and nibbling the edges of glass.

Leading

3 Lead knife. You'll need to cut those 6ft lengths of lead accurately, so buy a dedicated stained glass lead knife and keep it sharp.

4 All Nova Tool or Fid. Silly names, but it's actually one of the most useful - and cheap! - tools in your stained glass kit. Use it to open up the lead cames before leading, and to close them down after cementing.

5 Lead Vice. You could trap lead cames in your door before stretching it, but instead, keep your partner happy by investing in a lead vice. It grips one end of the lead whilst you tug on the other with pliers. Hold on tight!

6 Horse Shoe Nails. These have been stolen from blacksmiths - they use them to bang into horses hoofs, we use them for holding in place all those really annoying bits of lead that pop out all over the show when you're leading up.

7 Tallow Candle. These are made of animal fat and are used as a flux for the solder. Rub a bit on to each lead join before you solder. Think roast beef!

8 100W Soldering Iron. Try to get a soldering iron with a thermostat, as it won't melt you're carefully cut lead. My students have tried both gas and 200W soldering irons over the years, but the general consensus is that the 100W is the easiest to handle, and powerful enough for any soldering job.

9 Grade C Solder. Made sure you buy solder that's 60% lead and 40% tin for leaded stained glass work. Try to work in a well ventilated area when soldering - along with everything else related to stained glass, it's dangerous!

Cementing and Polishing

10 Leaded Light Cement. Strictly speaking this isn't exactly an essential, as you can make this up a lot cheaper with standard putty, white spirit and black powder paint. But I don't want to put you off with that hideous messy job right at the beginning - so buy a pot of ready made cement for starters.

11 Whiting. Used for absorbing all the mess made by the cement. Just sprinkle it over your panel and brush it off. Use some muscle.

12 Black Grate Polish. Use a shoe brush to shine your leads to twinkly perfection. Stand back and admire.

I admit it, I cheated. Top marks if you've spotted the two vital missing items in this otherwise most comprehensive of stained glass kits - glass and lead! Cutting glass is not difficult, but you do need a good glass cutter. There are various glass cutters to choose from. My personal favorite glass cutter is the pistol cutter. It is important to choose a cutter that works well for you, as this is a stained glass tool you will use constantly.

There are basically two types of cutters, one with steel wheels and those with tungsten carbide wheels.

Cutters with steel wheels tend to be less expensive but, usually don't last very long. The steel wheel becomes dull after repetitive use and must be replaced. Steel wheels are good for general purpose or softer glass. The size of the wheel and angle of the bevel on the wheel will determine how hard of a glass it can score.

Tungsten carbide wheels are more expensive than steel wheels. There durability tends to out weigh the cost difference. Many are self-lubricating which can save time.

Glass Grinders

Grinders are used to smooth out cuts and insure exact fitting, as well as to lessen the chance of cutting yourself. The alternative to a grinder is a diamond file. This is less expensive, but the time and effort needed far out weights buying a grinder.

When choosing a grinder consider the size of the work surface, the power of the grinder and the accessories included such as bits, face shield and foot switch.. Additional considerations should be the warranty and price

Soldering Iron

There are a wide variety of different manufactures, types and sizes of soldering irons. Most soldering irons range from 60 to 150 watts with tip sizes ranging from 1/8 inch to 3/8 inch. When choosing your iron check out how long it takes to heat up, how long it holds the correct temperature, does it have a temperature controller and are the tips removable.

Probably, the most important thing to consider when doing stained glass soldering, is to choose an iron that feels comfortable in your hand. If the iron is not comfortable, then this will more than likely show up in your solder lines.

Yes, price it a factor, but remember, a good quality soldering iron will last for years and give professional results.

Soldering Iron Stand

After choosing your soldering iron, you will need to purchase a soldering stand. The stand can be simple or elaborate. The simple ones hold your iron and sponge, whereas, the more expensive ones will have a built-in temperature controller, iron stand, sponge, power cord, a solder roll holder, flux bottle well, brush and a catch-all tray. Needless to say, the more elaborate ones will cost more.

Temperature Controller

If your iron does not include a built-in temperature controller, then you will definitely need a separate controller. Using a temperature controller will maintain a constant temperature for your soldering iron.

Breaking Pliers and Grozer Pliers

These two hand tools are used for breaking glass. Breaking pliers are used after you score a line and want to break the glass. Grozer pliers are used for breaking away small areas of glass.

Semi-Optional Equipment

Foiler Burnisher

A foiler burnisher is used with Tiffany construction (copper foil). This tool will allow you to securely press and adhere the copper foil to the glass. A burnisher is an inexpensive tool though you could use a tongue depressor.

Table Foiler

A table foiler automatically peels off the paper backing, centers it to the edges of the glass and partially crimps it. Using a table foiler will also eliminate copper foil from unwinding and becoming tangled.

Came Saw

Came saws are used to cut metal came in either zinc, brass or copper. Came saws range from a manual model to a power mitre chop saw.

A manual came saw consist of a precision saw and a mitre vise. This is the least expensive of all came saws, but will require more time and effort. Electric power came saws range from 90 to 250 watt units. Blade sizes vary from 2 inches to 5 ¾ inches.

All came saws adjust from 0 to 45 degrees allowing for proper mitres.

The more powerful the came saw, the easier it will cut, not to mention durability.

Cork-Backed Stainless Steel Ruler

This is a steel ruler that is backed in cork. This is nice when drawing or cutting lines on glass. The cork backing eliminates the ruler from slipping.

Soft Bristle Scrub Brush

The soft bristle scrub brush is great for polishing your stained glass. With its soft bristles, it is able to get into the tiniest crevices.

A Fid

This inexpensive tool is used to widen came. This becomes very important when using heavily textured glass.

Glass Saw

A glass saw is a nice addition to a stained glass workshop. With a glass saw you can make intricate cuts that otherwise would not be possible.

Glass saws can be a ring saw, band saw or wire saw. A ring saw has a circular diamond coated blade that allows you to cut in all directions. The band saw has a linear diamond coated blade and can cut glass up to ¾ of an inch thick. The wire saw has the thinnest blade giving you more flexibility for cutting intricate shapes and narrow cut lines.

All three types of saws come with various built-in features. It is up to you as to which one to choose. It needs to meet your own personal needs.

Came Bender

The came bender will perform precision curves on zinc, brass and copper came. This means greater design freedom when rigid came is used. With the came bender you can make circular and oval panels.

Copper Foil Sheers

These are specially designed sheers that will cut paper pattern pieces leaving the correct spacing needed for copper foil or lead.

Layout Blocks

These are used to hold cut pieces of glass together until you are ready to solder.

Glass Cutting Systems

There is a variety of glass cutting systems available. These systems will allow you to make repetitive and geometric shapes. Some of the more popular systems include Morton Portable Glass Shop, Circle and Strip Cutters, and Jitter Bug.

Light Box

The light box is nice for drawing patterns and viewing glass combinations.
