Xbox 360 Three Red Lights Fix - Repair It Yourself

If your Xbox 360 has stopped working and you are getting the 3 red light error don't panic, there is hope. With some basic tools and a decent repair manual you can fix it yourself.

You will need a set of torx screwdrivers, If you do not have a set you can pick up a cheap set at your local hardware store.

The 3 red light error means there is a general hardware failure. First thing you can try is to dis-connect everything and let your console sit for 20 minutes unplugged from the power. Re-connect everything and try it again, If you are still getting the error remove the hard drive and re-install it. Sometimes they get loose and you get a bad connection.

If that did not fix it you will need to open it up at this point. The most common failures are no video or disks will not read. Both can be repaired fairly easy.

If you have no video you can try a different video cable, borrow a friends if you do not have another one. If you still have no video but audio is working you will need to check the soldering connections on the main board for the video connector. Consult the manual before attempting this or any other internal repairs.

If your Xbox is not reading the disks or getting disk errors make sure your disks are clean. After that you may have to replace the DVD drive or if you have the skills you can remove the DVD drive and replace just the pick up assembly. This is a lot cheaper than replacing the whole drive. Again consult the repair manual before attempting this.

Your other option is to send your console off to Microsoft and Wait. Nothing worse than having Halo 3 and not being able to play it. I prefer to do my own mods and repairs. The console unit is very similar to your home computer, it is actually a small computer. With a little patience anyone can learn how to do there own repairs.

Once you learn about the inner workings of you game console and repair it you will become real popular with your friends when the game breaks down. This has turned into a part time business for me. Word seems to get around fast. If you want you can make some decent money doing repairs. People would much rather have someone local do their repairs.

Once you have gathered all of these parts you will need to disassemble your Xbox 360. This isn't a difficult process as long as you are careful with how you handle your system. Once your entire console has been disassembled the next step is to replace the thermal compound on the GPU and CPU with a more reliable solution. This is primarily how we will stop these two chips from overheating in the future and causing us to get the RROD again. I'm not even going to try to picture your shocked face, because I know that look, and it's a scary sight. I mean it's just sitting there, not helping you or anybody. You love your Xbox but it just quit on you. You bought it to help you deal with boredom and to play Call of Duty IV Modern Warfare online with your friends, but now it won't work and you don't even know what to do with yourself and your time anymore, and you really need a quick Xbox 360 fix.

This is how I felt when my Xbox 360 stopped working. I got the 3 red lights and I didn't know the first thing about how to go about getting it fixed. So the first thing I did was ask my friends how I could fix it. They asked me if my fingers are still working, and I said yes, then they asked how come I haven't typed it into Google yet. So I continued searching for other alternatives until I discovered that there were actually guides on how to deal with this kind of problem. These Xbox 360 fix guides were made by professionals who know how Microsoft products work. So I decided to look into this option because there was no way I was going to pay over 0 to send it in to Microsoft and wait for months hoping that they have actually "fixed" it.

Tips For Fixing Your Xbox 360

1) As soon as you get the red lights, turn off your console for a while and let it cool down.

2) After making sure that all the cords are properly attached try it again. And If you still get the red lights, proceed to step 3.

3) At this point, you can open up your console to see if the connection to the power supply is loose or off. But if you are not comfortable with opening up your console or don't have any tools you can employ a temporary fix called the towel trick.

4) The reason why the towel trick works as a temporary fix is because after some time one of the solder joints which connect the chips to the mother board becomes cracked so you have to find a way to solder it back on, but most people don't have solder equipment.

5) This is where the towel trick comes in, gently wrap your Xbox in a big cotton towel while your Xbox 360 is still running. Let it run for about 10 mins then turn it off.

6) This causes the solder joints to melt and form a proper connection once again without you having to open up the box, or get a soldering equipment. But remember that this is a temporary fix and you will still need a final solution. With this technique you can squeeze out another 30 mins to 10hrs of playtime before the 3 red lights show up again.

7) You might be able to extend that time if you keep the Xbox well cooled and out in the open. And make sure that there is nothing obstructing the vents from getting air.

Always remember to be careful when doing this because overheating any electronic device is not the best idea. And that is why you shouldn't keep using the towel method, you need a permanent Xbox 360 fix. I decided to get some professional assistance so i got my hands on about 3 Xbox 360 fix guides, and they showed me the proper way to solve the situation for good. It involves opening up your Xbox 360 so you should get accustomed to that, or ask one of your techie friends to help you out. Welder Repair - Equipment List

There are thousands of Repair Centers throughout North America that Service and Repair Welders. This equipment is used by Hobbyists, Farmers, and Industry professionals for both Hand and Automation applications. The Welders can be generally classified as being Transformer based, Transformer based with SCR switching, Chopper or Inverter based. High end products such as Engine Driven Welders, Synergic MIG Welders, and Plasma Welders fall into these same general categories.

Eventually, this equipment will fail and require repair. Large organizations take on in-house repairs but the majority of work occurs in privately run small businesses. Efficient Welder Service and Repair requires that the Repair Centers have a full range of Test Equipment and Welding Accessories. The following list outlines a good starting point for procurement of this Equipment:

1. Primary AC Power (Mains): 115V, 208/230V Single and 3 Phase, 460V 3 Phase.

These Voltages are used to encompass various input power requirements for multiple Welder configurations. Not all Welders run off the same Primary AC Voltage. A Welder must be tested at the same voltage as it is being used in the field. Any Welder that is capable of 460V operation must be tested at this voltage. Any Bus voltage balance problems will be noticeable only at the higher AC input voltage.

2. DVM (Digital Volt Meter) and Analog Meter.

A DVM provides great precision for all measurements. Ensure that your DVM has a Diode Test position, and is capable of measuring Capacitance. These are important features to have. An Analog Meter is also useful. It can provide a good indication of Power Supply ripple on a DC Supply through judgment of Meter needle stability.

3. Battery powered DSO (Digital Storage Oscilloscope).

Mains powered Oscilloscopes have grounded Alligator clips on the Oscilloscope Probes. I.e. the BNC outer is electrically connected to Mains ground. This can cause signal shorts when a measurement is being carried out. To avoid this problem a Mains Isolation Transformer and/or Isolated Probes will need to be used. Battery powered DSO's do not have this issue. Equipment portability is also important in a Workshop environment.

4. IGBT & MOSFET Tester or Component Analyzer.

Tests the functionality of IGBT and MOSFET switching components when a gating signal is applied. A Component Analyzer provides additional analysis of the D.U.T (Device-Under-Test) and alleviates the requirement for the Technician to know the configuration of the component leads.

5. SCR Component Analyzer.

Tests the functionality of SCR's with an applied gating signal. A Component Analyzer provides additional analysis of the D.U.T (Device-Under-Test) and alleviates the requirement for the Technician to know the configuration of the component leads.

6. Stator Winding Analyzer.

Tests the Stator Windings on Engine Driven Welders. Analyzes the windings to determine issues with continuity, and shorted turns. Can be used on both single phase and 3 phase output windings.

7. Capacitance Meter.

Invaluable for measuring the capacitance of Excitation Capacitors in Engine Driven Welders, and other equipment. Some DVM's do not include a Capacitance range.

8. ESR Meter.

Used to measure the Effective Series Resistance of Capacitors. Capacitor failures can occur at the lead bonding point. This problem can not be seen with a Capacitance Meter, but can account for internal losses. Provides a different perspective on Capacitor fault analysis.

9. AC / DC Current Clamp Meter, capable of measuring up to 1000 Amps.

Allows accurate measurement of Primary AC Power (Mains) Input current, Welder output current and Wirefeeder Motor current. Provides confirmation of Welder calibration.

10. Load Bank (Active or Passive).

Dissipates Weld output current at rates determined by adjustable resistance settings. Used to validate output current capabilities and for Burn-in testing. Active Load banks can provide variable output characteristics in real time.

11. Hi-Pot Tester or Insulation Tester.

Used to test for High Voltage leakage conditions (typically to ground).

12. Soldering Iron.

Weller makes some great offerings. Look for Soldering Stations with ESD safe housings. Having the right tips for the job is important.

13. Air Compressor. Up to 120 psi and 600 SCFH.

For general cleaning- Metal dust, and debris. Also used for Plasma Cutter operation.

14. Cylinder gases (Argon, Ar/CO2 75/25).

For Weld testing of units after Repair/Functional Test.

15. Assorted Hand tools.

Screwdrivers, Socket wrenches, Wrenches, Pliers, Hammers, Allen keys etc.

16. Torque Driver.

Most screws and bolts need to be torqued correctly to the Manufacturers specification. This is extremely important where thermal conductivity properties are important. IGBT's, MOSFET's and Hockey Puck SCR's must be correctly torqued to their Heatsink assembly.

17. Flow meter for torch testing.

Used to check gas flow rates through the torch. Important for Plasma Welding and MIG applications.

18. Coolant Conductivity Meter.

Used to test the conductivity of coolant that is used in Plasma Welding Systems. If the coolant becomes conductive this can cause the Plasma Welding Torch to become shorted. This causes permanent damage.

19. Wireless or Cell phone.

Allows the Technician to communicate to Technical Support staff (Manufacturers representatives) while troubleshooting the Welder.

20. Wirefeeder.

Used for Weld testing MIG (CV) Welders.

21. Assorted Stingers, MIG torches, TIG torches, Leads.

Most Welding Power Supplies don't come in with accessories, unless requested. These need to be available in different configurations for Weld testing the product.

22. Loading Dock with Fork Lift or Hoist.

Used to move heavy equipment in and out of the workshop.

23. Computer (Desk Top or Laptop) with Internet access.

Used to access Manufacturers sites for support inquiries, and downloading of Service Manuals. Also, preparation of Word documents, Database access etc.

24. ESD prevention materials and equipment.

Suitable lengths and quantities of Static Dissipative Matting, Wrist Straps, Foot Straps, Cords, Bonding Points, etc for setting up an EPA (ESD Protected Area). This designated area will be used for replacement of electronic components and PCA's (Printed Circuit Assemblies).
