How to Fix XBox 360 Ring of Death

You wanted to spend some quality time with your favorite XBox game.  So you pressed the power button.  Unfortunately all that came on were some pretty flashing red lights.

Now you are faced with the choice of sending it to Microsoft to be fixed, or to dirty your hands yourself.  Let's look at the pros and cons.

-They send you a box, you pack your precious cargo in it and send it off.  

-You sit with no XBox and have to resort to twiddling your thumbs.

-A week later and you are still twiddling your thumbs.  Frantically.

-10 days to 4 weeks later you have your new XBox.  It's time to rejoice.

(It's probably not really a new XBox though, just a reconditioned one that some other poor statistic like yourself sent in.)

-You play your heart out, getting new mileage on all your games, all the while hoping that it doesn't happen again...   

Fix it Yourself

-You find a good guide online after wading through many dangerous and downright inappropriate "fixes" like the "towel trick".

(You feel proud of yourself for resisting the towel trick, knowing how it would have overheated your console- shortening the lifespan of your XBox, and that it only would have been temporary anyway.)

Let me tell you about my experience of purchasing the one game that I had waited what seemed like eons to play. So I get home from the store with my new copy of everyone's favorite car stealing franchise and feverishly rip open the package to get out the prized disc inside. I turn on my 360 and pop in the disc. It spins in the tray and nothing comes up. Uh oh!

You have been here yourself I take it? Oh you know how frustrating it is. I couldn't believe that the 360 has done this to me multiple times but of all the times to do it it does it now. I have had enough.

Here are some quick tips to try if your system red rings.

First, remove any game that is in the system and power the unit off. Let it cool down for a bit and then try turning it back on after it has had a while to sit. If luck is shining on you your system may boot and start to work properly.

Second, make sure that the console is not sitting on top of or under any other components such as a receiver or DVD player. These can greatly increase the heat that is around the unit. This heat runs the risk of melting the soldering inside the system which is the main cause of the red rings of death.

Heat is a major issue with the Xbox 360s. Microsoft has since switched to a different chipset that runs much cooler, but there are a lot of consoles out there that may still suffer from overheating issues.

How to Fix Your Xbox - The Towel Trick

Before you continue reading, please bear in mind that you may risk a severe damage to your Xbox 360 while implementing the following tips that describe the so called "Towel Trick"!

Many Xbox users are often times facing problems with their console's gaming hardware, ranging from simple graphical problems to serious malfunctions that may completely stop your console from booting at all. The cause for many of such hardware failures lies in poorly processed soldering joints between the console's motherboard and the different hardware modules like the graphics card for example. Those broken joints lead to loose connections and therefore interfere with the whole gaming system.

The "Towel Trick" is directly geared towards fixing those broken soldering joints in a somewhat unusual manner. The goal is to overheat your Xbox so that the solder in those joints begins to melt and form a smooth and crack-free surface. You don't need any special tools for this, just a simple towel or two.

At first you have to unplug all cables from your Xbox console, you will only leave the power cable plugged in. Right after that, and after turning your Xbox on, you have to wrap one or two dry towels around the whole console. You also have to make sure to cover all venting slots and holes in order to maximize the overheating process. The Xbox should now be left running for about 20 minutes so that the solder begins to melt and forms a plain surface along the solder joints.

After those 20 minutes have passed you have to turn your Xbox off and remove the towels. Leave the console for another 20 minutes and let it cool down. That is quite important since it reduces the danger of damaging the integrated hardware! At last, plug all cables back in and try to start your Xbox 360. If everything went right, it should now boot like normal and you will be able to play your favorite games again.

Well there are few things that you can try to save your console, the first thing to do is unplugged everything and make sure that when you reconnect everything it is firmly attached and also do not use an extension plug but make sure that you plug it directly into the wall.

The second thing that you can try is to remove the hard drive and then reattach it, as is too can cause a problem sometimes and you may find it works.
